Tasted firsthand on a Bartesian® Professional. The Manhattan is a single-spirit whiskey capsule and is compatible with the Bartesian Duet, Premium, and Professional.
I came into this one honestly: I usually drink my whiskey neat, I lean toward scotch or rye over bourbon, and this was my first Manhattan as a cocktail. Whiskey cocktails are new territory for me — so consider this the take of a curious owner, not a Manhattan purist.
Quick Verdict
What Is the Bartesian Manhattan Pod?
The Manhattan is one of Bartesian’s classic whiskey capsules, named after New York City’s Manhattan Club and built around sweet vermouth and aromatic bitters with a hint of cherry. Whiskey is the base spirit, which you supply yourself; the capsule itself contains no alcohol. You pour your own whiskey into the machine’s bottle, drop in the pod, choose a strength, and the machine does the rest.
How I Tasted It
Honest upfront: I usually drink my whiskey neat, and when I do I tend to reach for scotch or rye over bourbon. It was also my first Manhattan as a cocktail. Whiskey cocktails in general are new territory for me.
For the spirit, I used Woodford Reserve. I keep several bottles of bourbon on hand, and it seemed like the best one for this tasting. I ran the pod on the Regular setting, then shook the drink with ice in a shaker and poured it over fresh ice in a stemless martini glass, finishing with a single maraschino cherry.
What Does the Bartesian Manhattan Taste Like?
Short version: it tastes good, and it’s smooth. On the nose there’s a clear sweetness, a bourbony-sweet smell I liked right away. The first sip carries that same bourbon-whiskey character, but it goes down smooth rather than hot or harsh. For someone new to whiskey cocktails, it was an easy drink to like.
First Note — Aroma
Sweet, “bourbony sweet,” inviting rather than sharp. The nose pulls you in before the first sip.
Second Note — First Sip
Clear whiskey character, unmistakably bourbon-forward. There’s no hiding what’s in the glass.
Third Note — Body
Smooth and easy-drinking. The sweet-vermouth-and-bitters backbone rounds it out and keeps it balanced.
Finish — Clean & Smooth
Clean and smooth, with no harsh burn even on the Regular setting. It finishes easy and invites the next sip.
What Whiskey and Setting Should You Use?
I used Woodford Reserve on the Regular setting and it worked well. Regular pours about 2 oz of spirit and was nicely balanced; Strong pushes it toward 3.4 oz if you want it more spirit-forward. A rye whiskey would give the Manhattan a spicier edge, and that is the direction I would try next time.
On glassware, Bartesian officially recommends a coupe glass served up. I didn’t have a coupe, so I used a stemless martini glass and served it over ice. Use whatever glassware you have on hand.
Who Should Try the Manhattan Pod?
✅ YES, try it if:
- You like bourbon or whiskey
- You want a smooth, party-friendly whiskey cocktail without mixing one by hand
- You’re curious about whiskey cocktails but usually drink your whiskey neat
⏭ SKIP it if:
- You don’t like the taste of whiskey, or you’re after something light and fruity — this is a whiskey drink, and it tastes like one
One honest note on when I’d drink it. Poolside or outside on a warm day, I usually reach for rum, tequila, or vodka cocktails, because neat whiskey doesn’t fit that mood for me. A Manhattan like this could fill that gap. It’s also a nice option for an evening at home with guests when you want the whiskey taste in cocktail form.
Final Verdict
Rating: 7.5 / 10. I came in as someone who usually drinks whiskey neat and had never had a Manhattan as a cocktail, and I still enjoyed this one. It’s smooth, it tastes good, and it’s an easy whiskey cocktail to like. Next time, I want to make it with a rye whiskey to see how the extra spice plays. My one honest caveat: this was my first Manhattan, so I don’t have another version to measure it against yet. A different whiskey down the road might nudge the score — but for this tasting, a 7.5 feels honest.
